There has never been a better time to consider graduate work in genetics or more choices, tools, and rapid advancements in the field. To participate in these exciting opportunities, broad training is needed. The 90 faculty in the program provide a truly interdisciplinary and intercollegiate group with members representing the Colleges of Agriculture, Medicine, Science and Veterinary Medicine. The doctoral program in genetics at Texas A&M University is designed to provide a flexible curriculum for graduate studies. Students take four of five graduate level genetics courses, which include Introductory Genetics, Population Genetics, Quantitative Genetics, Biochemical Genetics and Cytogenetics. They can tailor the remainder of their coursework to match their specific interests. The curriculum and research opportunities allow for research in quantitative, molecular and biochemical genetics in a wide range of plant, animal and microbial systems at organismal, cellular and sub-cellular levels. The Ph.D. is a research degree, and a major strength of the program at Texas A&M is the diversity of research opportunities available which allows students from a wide range of academic backgrounds to integrate rapidly into the challenge and excitement of graduate study in genetics. First-year students also participate in lab rotations which allow them to explore the breadth of research opportunities in Genetics at Texas A&M.
